Glacier Experience Trail

The Glacier Experience Trail supplements the theoretical knowledge that is provided at the visitor centre at the Diavolezza valley station. The circular walk takes about one-and-a-half to two hours and leads you along a footpath past five information points where you can find out about the world of glaciers all around you and study them and all their fascinating features at close quarters. The tour starts and ends at the Diavolezza mountain inn.

A leaflet is available from both the top and bottom stations of the Diavolezza cable car that provides key facts relating to the five information points. This page offers further detail about all five information points.

Information point 1

A slice of paradise, …

Glaciers define their landscapes and give them a distinctive, unmistakeable character such as we find here in the Bernina region. Glacier landscapes are rich in different patterns and shapes, so there is always something new to observe and discover.

Information point 2

…, shaped by the ages, …

Glaciers react very sensitively to climate change. They are affected by rising temperatures in particular. Glaciers therefore also reflect the fact that we humans are exacerbating the natural greenhouse effect.

Information point 3

…, in a state of constant change, …

Glacial landscapes are dynamic landscapes. Because the ice is moving due to the effect of gravity, and because it melts at temperatures above zero degrees, changes are taking place all the time. The permafrost is in the ground, so it is less easily visible than the glaciers, but it, too, defines the landscape and is also affected by warmer temperatures.

Information point 5

…, to which we all bear witness.

Glaciers are not only beautiful features of the landscape but also valuable reservoirs of fresh water. In mountainous regions where the climate is dry, glacial meltwater is a lifesaver. For the people there, the question of whether and how the glaciers can be prevented from melting away altogether is a matter of life or death.
